Sizes vary widely; ranging from pine-nut sized birdseye chili to the large capsicum. Generally, the smaller the chili, the hotter the burning  sensation it creates  in  the tongue, stomach right down to the anus! The smaller varieties are usually added as spice, in small quantities, to enhance or to add 'kicks' to food. The larger chilies can be cooked as main ingredient in a dish, as they are milder to taste.

Chili was indigenous to Central, South America
and the West Indies with 5000 thousands years
of history, as the first cultivation of chili was around
3000 BC.

 

With the Spanish conquests, chilies were finally introduced to the rest of the world. Today there are more than 400 varieties of chilies. In Mexico alone, there are more than 140 varieties of chilies grown.
To date chili is consumed by ¼ of the world’s population.

 

Chilies may bear different names, exhibit different colors, shapes and sizes, but they have one thing in common: they are being loved for their fiery and pungent sensations. As the saying goes for many seasoned chili consumers: the hotter the better; no heat no kick!

In general, pepper or chili
refers to the smaller species, and are usually more pungent to taste than the bigger species which are usually named as capsicum or bell peppers.
